We haven't been able to put on our annual live performance of the Messiah this year, but on Christmas Eve Drystone Radio will broadcast an hour of highlights of the performance we gave in Christ Church, Skipton in December 2016.
Conductor Ben Crick will introduce a selection of his favourite bits, including Comfort ye, I know that my redeemer liveth, The Trumpet Shall Sound and of course the famous Hallelujah chorus.
Four years ago, Skipton Building Society Camerata mounted a crowdfunding campaign to support the orchestra’s ‘Long and Short Messiah’ project. Camerata presented two versions of Messiah that year: a shortened version which was taken to a number of primary schools in and around Skipton; and a full-length public performance in Christ Church. The public performance was recorded and it is from that recording that this Thursday’s selection of highlights will be taken.
The year 2016 was a difficult one for Camerata but the response to the campaign was fantastic - not only from the public who raised over £6,000 for the project, but from the professional singers and players who waived their fees.
Now, sadly, those same musicians are largely unable to earn any fees from live performance. So, as we listen to those 2016 highlights, let’s hope that by this time next year the trumpet shall once again sound as we come together for another rousing rendition of Handel’s joyous Messiah.
