Two choral settings of the Magnificat by Bach father and son feature in this concert by Sheffield Oratorio Chorus and Skipton Camerata directed by Alan Eost.

Johann Sebastian Bach wrote this setting of the Magnificat (Mary's hymn of praise on learning she would bear the Son of God) for his forces at Leipzig in 1723 but subsequently revised it into the form we know today. Set in Latin, it is unusually compact and radiates joy and exultation.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, J.S.'s fifth son (in his lifetime much better known than his father), composed his setting in 1749, and in this work shows clearly the influence of his father, both technically and inspirationally.
